Rhea Receptions

Introducing

Rhea Receptions is a new thematic series comprised of reviews, essays, and other engagements with the ancient world in pop culture and not restricted to academic, peer-reviewed publications. The goal of Rhea Receptions is to bring the ancient world to a broader audience by engaging with public-facing, non-specialist depictions of the ancient Mediterranean world in popular, modern media writ large.

2026 Theme: Gods and Heroes

The theme for the inaugural installment of our Rhea Receptions series is “Gods and Heroes.” We are soliciting reviews of and essays on fictional literature, film, podcasts, blogs, video games, museum exhibits and any other medium related to this theme. Reviewers are encouraged to consult Rhea’s general guidelines, but creative essays, non-formal engagement, and multi-media discussions reviews are encouraged and welcome in conjunction with the wider, non-specialized audience.

If you would like to write an essay on any kind of pop culture receptions of ‘Gods and Heroes’ by May 1, 2026 for inclusion in our inaugural series set to be published in July 2026, send a brief (3–5 sentence) proposal to rheaclassicalreviews@gmail.com or use the link below.

Please note that Rhea cannot furnish materials for any potential writers that fall outside of the literary scope (ie. museum exhibition tickets, video games, film downloads, etc.)
